Roan Mountain State Park
Just outside of Bakersville, NC is Roan Mountain and Roan Mountain State
Park. The highest peak is the Unaka Mountain Range.
Roan Mountain is one of the most beautiful mountains east
of the Rockies. 
While you are there, you can visit the 600 acre rhododendron
garden and hike the 1 mile Roan Trail near Carver’s Gap.
The trail is comprised of 3 loops. The first loop is paved,
and features 16 stations keyed to the informational brochure.
There is also an observation deck which provides a spectacular
view of the surrounding areas.
While at Roan Mountain, you can enjoy camping, either at
the campsites or in the rental cabins, go picnicking hiking,
and attend educational activities like wildflower tours
and bird walks. Also, with 100 inches annually of snow,
Roan Mountain is the only state park in North Carolina
with cross country skiing.
