Famous People from North Carolina
Billy Graham (1918- ) –One of the greatest evangelists of modern times. Thanks to his sermons, thousands have come to a personal knowledge and belief in Jesus Christ. He is known for his passion for others regardless of their race, socio-economic status or lifestyle. His son, Franklin Graham is the founder of Samaritan’s Purse (headquartered in Boone, NC) which helps children all over the world. Samaritan’s Purse is most known for its Operation Christmas Child ministry which encourages families to fill shoeboxes with toys and necessities for children around the globe.
Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) - Born in Raleigh, and then moved to Tennessee with his family when he was 17. He became the 17th President after Lincoln’s death and later became a US senator in 1875, becoming the only person to do so after being President.
James K. Polk (1795-1849) - Born in Pineville, Polk was the 11th President. He graduated from University of North Carolina in 1818, served in the House of Representatives in 1824, and was President from 1845-1849.
Andy Griffith (1926-) – Born in Mt. Airy, Mr. Griffith is best known for his roles on the Andy Griffith Show and Matlock. He now resides in Manteo.
Susie M. Sharp -Born in Rocky Mount, she became the first female chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1974
