The Biltmore Estate

Built in the late 1890’s, the Biltmore Estate in
Asheville
was the 250 room home built for George Vanderbilt. The house
took a crew of 1,000 men 5 years to build. The Estate is
the most visited attraction in North Carolina. The 125,000
acre yard is renowned for its gardens, lawns and incredible
views which can be seen as you tour the landscapes designed
by Frederick Law Olmstead.
While visiting the Biltmore Estate, you can visit
the 4 acre English Garden which has 50,000 tulips, 40 varieties
of annuals and perennials, and 2,000 roses in more than
100 varieties. There is also an Azalea Garden with over
1,000 azaleas representing 14 species. The Azalea Garden
has one of the most inclusive collections of native and
hybrid azaleas in existence. Other gardens at Biltmore Estate
include the 16th Century Italian Garden with its statuaries
and pools, and the Conservatory with its colorful tropical
and hothouse plants.
There are several trails at the Biltmore Estate. The Meadow Trail has a vista from which you can see Canadian geese, mallard ducks blue herons and various songbirds, as well as waterfalls, beavers and other wildlife.
While visiting the Estate, be sure to try some of the wine produced from the estate grown grapes. Each year the Biltmore Estate Winery produces 75, 000 cases of wine from the 200 tons of grapes grown in its vineyard.
