Asheville

Once called the Paris of the South, Asheville is a city of art, culture, and diversity, as well as stunning architecture and history that makes it an appealing place to visit.

One of the most well known destinations in Asheville is the Biltmore Estate. With over 200 rooms, several gardens, a winery and its convenience to the Historic Biltmore Village and its many shops, restaurants and galleries, the Biltmore has plenty of activities to keep you busy for several hours or days.

Other homes to your on your visit to Asheville, is the Zebulon B. Vance Birthplace State Historic Site. Here you can see how the people in the mountains lived during a much simpler time. Another home, especially enjoyed by lovers of literature is the boyhood home of Thomas Wolfe, located on Spruce Street.

In Asheville, you will find an assortment of museums sure to interest the whole family! At the Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum, you can see a 1916 Overland, a 1913 Model T Ford, or a model A coupe with a rumble seat—to name just a few of the great cars that are on display.

For a great family activity that is fun as well as educational, be sure to head downtown to Park Place. Here you can visit Health Adventure and its many exhibits and displays about the human body. While at Health Adventure, you can touch a 5 foot high brain and be challenged by creativity-testing games. After visiting Health Adventure, head over to the Body Works Gallery where you can test your jumping ability and skills or journey through the bloodstream.

In the Miracle of Life Gallery, you will learn about life before birth and genetics. Especially fun for the younger children is the Creative PlaySpace, where they can dress-up as cowboys, pirates, and other fun characters. The children can put on a puppet show or slide down an enormous tongue. Other family-friendly museums include the Asheville Art Museum and the Colburn Gem & Mineral Museum.

If you love nature, then the Western North Carolina Nature Center is a must see! It is here, that you can pet a lamb, learn how to milk a cow, or get up close and personal with a red wolf, a grey wolf or even a mountain lion. The center strives to show how the environment, animals and people can work together to shape the world in which we live. Also of special interest for the outdoorsman are the Botanical Gardens located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. At the 10 acre garden, you will find an azalea garden, hundreds of plants indigenous to the western Appalachians, a rock garden, and of special interest, a garden for the blind.

Asheville has many things to offer its guest, no matter their age or interest. So, what are you waiting for? We can’t wait to get to know you!
