Asheville
Once called the Paris of the South, Asheville is
a city of art, culture, and diversity, as well as stunning
architecture and history that makes it an appealing place
to visit.
One of the most well known destinations in Asheville is the Biltmore Estate. With over 200 rooms, several gardens, a winery and its convenience to the Historic Biltmore Village and its many shops, restaurants and galleries, the Biltmore has plenty of activities to keep you busy for several hours or days.
Other homes to your on your visit to Asheville, is the
Zebulon B. Vance Birthplace State Historic Site. Here you
can see how the people in the mountains lived during a much
simpler time. Another home, especially enjoyed by lovers
of literature is the boyhood home of Thomas Wolfe, located
on Spruce Street.
In Asheville, you will find an assortment of museums sure to interest the whole
family! At the Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum, you can see
a 1916 Overland, a 1913 Model T Ford, or a model A coupe
with a rumble seat—to name just a few of the great cars
that are on display.

For a great family activity that is fun as well as educational, be sure to
head downtown to Park Place. Here you can visit Health Adventure
and its many exhibits and displays about the human body.
While at Health Adventure, you can touch a 5 foot high brain
and be challenged by creativity-testing games. After visiting
Health Adventure, head over to the Body Works Gallery where
you can test your jumping ability and skills or journey
through the bloodstream.
In the Miracle of Life Gallery, you will learn about life
before birth and genetics. Especially fun for the younger
children is the Creative PlaySpace, where they can dress-up
as cowboys, pirates, and other fun characters. The children
can put on a puppet show or slide down an enormous tongue.
Other family-friendly museums include the Asheville Art
Museum and the Colburn Gem & Mineral Museum.
If you love nature, then the Western North Carolina
Nature Center is a must see! It is here, that you can
pet a lamb, learn how to milk a cow, or get up close and
personal with a red wolf, a grey wolf or even a mountain
lion. The center strives to show how the environment, animals
and people can work together to shape the world in which
we live. Also of special interest for the outdoorsman are
the Botanical Gardens located on the campus of the University
of North Carolina at Asheville. At the 10 acre garden, you
will find an azalea garden, hundreds of plants indigenous
to the western Appalachians, a rock garden, and of special
interest, a garden for the blind.
